Fifth Annual Paw Paw Festival

Saturday, September 28: Noon-5, and
Sunday, September 29: Noon-5

Pawpaws are an integral part of Appalachian history. They are a native North American fruit. Native Americans not only ate the fruit; they made rope out of the bark. The Shawnee had a “paw paw month” on their calendar. George Washington’s favorite dessert was the pawpaw, and the Lewis & Clark expedition consumed the fruit when they ran out of food. Mary Draper Ingles was sustained by paw paws on her long trek home from captivity.

For various reasons, pawpaws have no commercial value, so people rarely see or hear about them. Few people know about this fruit and how easy it is to grow in their own yards.

Learn how to select, plant, and care for the paw paw. Go way down yonder to the pawpaw patch! Enjoy great bands and sip on local wine. Kids & dogs welcome.

Dog Days of Summer: July 27 - Aug 18

Beware of the dog days of summer! This is the time of year when things get a bit weird.

The dog days of summer are the hot, sultry days of summer. Historically, they were the period following the rising of the star system Sirius (known as the “Dog Star”), which meant heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, mad dogs, and bad luck. Ordinary people, places, and things start to seem a little peculiar.

Get away from it all! Escape to JBR Vineyards & Winery to experience open spaces, fresh breezes, and fine wines. Bring your dog, who is also, no doubt, feeling out of sorts.

Each event takes place on:
Saturday: Noon-5, and
Sunday: 1-5

Aug 3 - 4: What does Pinot Noir taste like when not fermented on the skins?
